contact Tom Bagola at 330-747-9202 or email:ysunewmancenter@sbcglobal.net | Collegiate Challenge Alternative Spring Break to Florida takes place every year over YSU's spring break and is sponsored by Protestant and Catholic Campus Ministries. |
Collegiate Challenge started as an alternative spring break building program for college and high school students and is now one of the largest school break programs in the country. Student groups are registered with participating Habitat for Humanity affiliates around the country depending on group requests and site availability. From the beaches of Florida to the Badlands of South Dakota, every site location provides a unique experience of local culture and quality hands-on construction.
During Collegiate Challenge, construction on a work site ranges from building trusses and framing houses to landscaping and renovating homes. On-site construction supervision is provided and building experience is not necessary. Student groups are responsible for their transportation, an affiliate donation, and a per person program fee to Habitat for Humanity International for medical insurance and program costs. The donation to the affiliate includes building costs during the students' stay and any housing costs. Accommodations range from churches to YMCAs and include a sleeping area, and showering and cooking facilities.
YSU Cost: $150.00 per person is the total fee. Your fee covers transportation to and from Jacksonville, Florida; meals during the work week which are prepared at the church or work site; affiliate fee; insurance; accommodations on the way down and back, as well as accommodations in Florida. Not included in the cost: meals traveling down and back; meals on the Saturday and Sunday prior to the workweek in Jacksonville.
